Milton Town Meeting members approved a zoning article Thursday night that will allow a landscaping business at 919 Blue Hill Ave. to continue operating as usual. The article was one of two that needed to be discussed following the first part of the meeting on Oct. 22.
As passed, it amends the town’s zoning bylaws to include language that what defines a “landscaping” business and how much of what type of equipment can be stored on the property.
The article, which was proposed by neighbors of the property, also requires that the home on the property remain occupied. It was brought to Town Meeting after a variance granted to owner Tom Coulter was denied by the Massachusetts Land Court earlier this year.
Now, the Planning Board is allowed to issue a special permit for the business, Coulter Landscaping, and the Coulter family that lives in a home on the property.
A number of residents rose to ask questions about the article and one questioned whether this was considered “spot zoning” and was being done to help only one person. However, proponents said that since it fulfilled a public purpose of keeping jobs, it was legal.
Ultimately, the article passed with a standing vote.
The last article on the warrant, which dealt with the zoning of assisted living developments, was sent back to the Planning Board by a majority vote after several residents raised concerns that it was not written specifically enough.
