The Milton Board of Selectmen terminated the contract of Town Administrator Kevin Mearn Thursday afternoon, three days after they had signaled their intentions to push him out.
The 2-1 vote on Monday, selectmen voted not renew Mearn's expired one-year contract, due mostly to reported communication issues between Mearn and Police Chief Richard Wells.
But Mearn returned to work Tuesday after his attorneys argued that the decision did not include official termination language.
At the Thursday meeting, however, there was no second guessing whether the decision was an official termination.
Selectman Bob Sweeney read a motion consisting of 11 parts, outlining that the termination was effective immediately after the meeting and that Mearn was to clean out his desk and turn over his keys and access cards right away.
In the meantime, selectmen have appointed Assistant Town Administrator Annemarie Fagan to serve as an interim town administrator with an annual salary of $125,000. Fagan's new position also took effect immediately following the meeting.
At a regular meeting next Thursday, selectmen will discuss the "next steps," including forming a search committee and the qualifications and traits they would like to see in the next own administrator.
