Denis Keohane, a member of the Milton School Committee, beat out Board of Selectmen incumbent John Shields by just 197 votes after securing 3,116 votes compared to Shields' 2,919 votes in Milton's town election Tuesday.
Prior to the election, Keohane said he would step down from the school committee to serve as selectmen however the town's charter does not require him to do so. A temporary school committee member will be appointed by the current committee and the Board of Selectmen to serve in Keohane's place until next year's town election, interim Town Clerk Fredrick Frithsen said Tuesday night.
In the town clerk's race, Susan Galvin, current assistant town clerk, received 2,343 votes to secure the position besting candidates Mike Joyce who received votes 2,029 votes and Marion McEttrick who received 1,922.
In other contested races:
Town Assessor: James Henderson won with 2,606 votes compared to William Bennett's 2,580 votes
Planning Board: Michael Kelly beat out Cheryl Friedman Tougias with 2,721 votes compared to her 2,714 votes
Three-year library trustee term: Brendan McLaughlin, Barbara Mason, and Herbert Voigt secured positions on the board after all secured with well over 1,200 more votes than Sheryl Fleitman.

Town treasurer: James McAuliffe
School Committee: Lynda-Lee Sheridan, Mary Kelly
Park commissioner: Stephen Affanato
Board of Health: Timothy Jay Lowney
Trustees of the Milton Cemetery: Paul Dolan
Housing Authority: Joseph Murphy
