The following was submitted by the Melrose Drama Program:
The Melrose Veteran's Memorial Middle School Drama Club is pleased to present "Starmites-Lite", a rollicking musical staged by the MVMMS Drama students as their 8th Grade recital piece. The play is directed and choreographed by Melrose students Nate Shu, Samantha Sweet and Natalie Brogan. Teacher and Drama Club Advisor Brent Bueno is mentoring the students on their directorial debuts. MHS graduate Stephan Reale is returning to music direct the show. "Starmites “tells the story of a shy teenager, Eleanor, who creates a fantasy world involving science fiction characters from her comic book collection. She escapes into her fantasy world where she becomes involved in the conflict between the evil ShakGraa and the Starmites, the guardian angels of Inner Space. The Starmites believe that Eleanor is pre-ordained to save the universe from destruction. In her electrifying journey, Eleanor meets Amazonian cannibal beauties, the Hunk" of inner space and many more "out of this world" colorful characters. This high energy, exciting and hilarious musical is filled with rock 'n roll, doo-wop, rap and gospel music and is suitable for all ages. Nominated for six Tony awards when it was on Broadway, this sci-fi rock 'n roll musical should not be missed.
The play will be performed at the Melrose Performing Arts Center at the Middle School on Friday, February 8th at 7PM and on Saturday, February 9th at 2PM. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students, children and Seniors and will be available at the door. For more information, please contact Mr. Bueno at email@example.com.
In addition to being the 8th Graders final Recital Piece, the play will also benefit Melrose’s “Operation Thank You.” This is an organization whose goal is to send Melrose Vietnam veterans, free of charge, to their memorial in Washington, DC, in May, in order to commemorate the Vietnam War’s 50th anniversary. The trip is a great way to say thank you to our veterans for their heroic commitment on behalf of our country and community. This effort is supported by many city officials including Mayor Robert Dolan, and Ryan McLane, director of veteran services for Melrose, Wakefield and Saugus, and Tom Brow, MVMMS Principal.
The cost for each veteran to attend is around $250, which covers a veteran's bus fare, hotel stay and tour and sightseeing fees throughout the trip. Eighth-graders Colleen Driscoll, Rachel Fracasso, Daniella Furtado, Teagan Ingalls, Taylor Norton, Gianna Paladino, Jenna Santos, Zelda Stewart, and Maria Tramontozzi are all part of this year’s “Operation Thank You” club at the middle school. The club’s main goal is to raise the funds required to enable all Melrose Vietnam veterans to travel to Washington, at no cost to them, to view the monument dedicated to them and their comrades.
The Cast and Crew of Starmites will take up a collection for “Operation Thank You” following each performance, and all proceeds generated from concessions sold during the shows will also be donated to the fund.
Please come out and see this great Melrose Drama show and support our Veterans at the same time!
