John Phelan/WikiCommonsAfter hearing that Medford earned the #6 spot on Boston.com’s list of Top 10 Best Locations to Live in Mass., Mayor Michael J. McGlynn was ecstatic, but not surprised.
“We were running to our computer to make sure someone didn’t make a mistake,” he joked. “To see our name there makes us very proud. It’s what we have always known and what others are now discovering.”
Boston.com analyzed criteria including crime rate and crime type, access to MBTA and commuter rail stops, number of grocery stores, number of historical locations, and acres of “open space” to determine the best places to live in the state.
Chad White, a Medford firefighter who grew up in the city, said that Medford has a lot of offer.
“I think it was a great place to grow up. It’s a very eclectic city,” he said, noting that Medford offers lakes, trees, and hiking trails in addition to the benefits of its proximity to Boston.
Mayor McGlynn said that what makes the city so great is the people that live there.
“I think we saw this week they have a quality where they show love and support and loyalty for their neighbor,” he said, noting that Medford residents have been looking out for the Campbell family since Krystal Campbell was killed in the Boston Marathon bombings last week.
“We can never fill a void or end the sadness for the Campbell family, but we can show that we can be there to support them in whatever their needs are,” he said. “That’s what makes me so proud about this city.”
