T Police, transportation managers, and local police are expected to honor an outgoing MBTA bus driver Wednesday, who in August spotted a wandering child and helped reunite the girl with her mother.
Donna D'Amelio was driving her regular route Aug. 6, when she noticed the 2-year-old girl walking unattended in the street near the corner of Riverside Avenue and Lightguard Way, a very busy intersection. D'Amelio stopped her bus, called police, and waited with the girl unto officers arrived.
The girl was transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital for evaluation while Medford officers canvassed the neighborhood. Nearby, they found a door left ajar in a housing development adjacent to the intersection and awoke the parents of the girl, whose mother was visibly upset by the news that her daughter was walking unattended.
The commendation ceremony is slated for 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Transit Police headquarters in Boston.
