The McGlynn School string ensemble's gold medal will send them April 22 to play with five other groups from Massachusetts at a joint concert in Worcester.

The McGlynn School String Ensemble took home a gold medal April 1 from a regional three-day festival, the school department said.

The group of 20 students in grades 5 through 8 were selected to advance by the Massachusetts Instrumental and Chorus Conductors Association, which held the festival.

"The children at Medford are fortunate to have instrumental programs," said orchestra teacher Sophia Chang, in a statement. "It is the result of the effort and enthusiasm of every student that we can pursue music-making together. I am so glad that their MICCA experience is inspiring and rewarding."

The group performed three selections from J.S. Bach, Gustav Holst, and Wagner, the last of which was arranged by Chang.

The students are scheduled to join five other gold medal recipient string ensembles from around the state for a performance at 2 p.m. April 22 at Mechanics Hall in Worcester. The performance is free.
