Sterling and Teddy Bear,
are up for adoption.

The local nonprofit Kitty Connection has roughly 100 stray and surrendered cats in foster homes, and the group will put many of them up for adoption tonight at Pet Supplies Plus in Wellington Circle.

The group offers cats and kittens at the store each week for $100 and $150, respectively. All proceeds go to rescuing and vaccinating more strays.

Some older cats will be available for $50, said Connection codirector Karen Beasley, since people tend to favor kittens. She added that the area has seen a sharp uptick in the number of strays in recent years.

"It's an explosion," Beasley said, chalking it up to delinquent pet owners who can't afford to neuter their pets, or who simply abandon them.

The Connection has a few cats up for adoption with rare forms of feline leukemia, or FelV, and feline AIDS, or FIV, as well as abused cats and others suffering from heart murmurs.

"These are harder cats to adopt, but they still have a lot of love to give," she said.

Kitty Connection will feature these cats at "Adopt a Hard-to-Adopt Cat Adoption Day' next Wednesday from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. at the group's headquarters on 6 Cudworth St. In addition to holding adoption events, the Connection teaches the public about responsible pet ownership, which includes spaying and neutering. The group is pushing for a mandatory spay/neuter ordinance in Medford. The Connection also rescues dogs and other pets.

The group has about 60 volunteers, including Arlington resident Lisa Hersey. She hosted an adoption event on Wednesday at her home.

"I had lost a cat over the winter and decided I wanted to do something to help other cats," she said.

Kitty Connection holds adoptions every Thursday at Pet Supplies Plus from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
