The building at 10 Hazleton St. the Department of Neighborhood Development is expected to officially put up for sale Monday.

The building on Hazelton Street in Mattapan that once housed the neighborhood’s library will be put up for sale shortly.

The 7,800-square-foot structure at 10 Hazelton St. was the community’s library from 1931-2009 and was replaced by a new building on Blue Hill Avenue.

The city-owned property has been rented out in the past, but for the most part has sat lightly used. The Department of Neighborhood Development seeks to sell the property to the highest bidder and one that fits a criteria shaped by the community at public meetings.

The building and the 13,700-square-foot lot it sits were assessed in 2013 for a little over $2 million.

At two community meetings, one in December 2012 and in February 2013, residents called for a low-impact use for the site, such as a senior center.

The property poses a number of challenges for any potential buyer.

It is situated in a zoning district that allows only limited residential use. Use as a community center, day care, or place of worship are not outright forbidden at the property. But the majority of commercial and non-small-scale residential uses would violate the Article 60 Zoning Code, resulting in a city and community review process.

In addition to the zoning, Chris Rooney, a project manager for DND, has said in the past the department will not allow the brick building to be demolished, which has been described by many as “stunning” and “beautiful”.

The property will be on the market until June 3, according to Rooney. More information about the property can be found here.
