On Sunday, November 11th, at 2:00 pm, the Abbot Public Library will host a talk and book signing by Judy Anderson, former curator at the Jeremiah Lee Mansion and author of "Glorious Splendor: the 18th-Century Wallpapers in the Jeremiah Lee Mansion in Marblehead, Massachusetts." Come learn about the history of Marblehead in the 1700s as Anderson discusses the unique wallpapers of the Mansion and similar wallpapers from other important houses of the same period.
Many people are familiar with, and awed by, the original hand-painted English wallpapers in one of the most superlative mid-18th-century houses in America: Marblehead’s historical Jeremiah Lee Mansion, which was built around 1766-68. However, most people are not aware that another similar suite of murals, from precisely the same time, is displayed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, removed from a late-colonial house in Albany, New York, when it was torn down in the 1890s. That grand house and another one nearby (which has connections to Marblehead’s General John Glover) provide important information about the Lee Mansion’s rare painted wallpapers, including their probable manufacturer, and how they would have been purchased and installed in the house. Without this important evidence from those other two homes, the Lee Mansion’s splendid mural papers would have remained a beautiful but elusive mystery.
In her talk, former Lee Mansion Curator Judy Anderson, independent since 2010 after 16 years of working with the house, will discuss those other houses and their extraordinary documentary evidence. She also will provide a less familiar view of the Lee Mansion by showing the exquisite array of colorful patterns that would have graced the walls of less prominent rooms and other houses in Marblehead, articulating the range of color and pattern that could have been seen in fine American homes on the eve of independence.
Signed copies of "Glorious Splendor: The 18th-Century Wallpapers in the Jeremiah Lee Mansion in Marblehead, Massachusetts" will be available for purchase at the lecture.
Books also are sold at several locations in town, benefitting those local organizations and stores, or directly through the author, to help her cover the self-funded publication cost of the full-color book.
The Abbot Public Library is located at 235 Pleasant Street, Marblehead, MA 01945. For additional information, please call 781-631-1481.
