Come Meet Amy Kwei, Author of “A Concubine for the Family”
A True-Life Family Drama Set In a Tumultuous Era of Chinese History
Sunday, December 9th at the Abbot Library
What woman, in our society, today, could imagine giving a younger woman to her husband, as a birthday gift? Yet this is the courageous and selfless action taken by Purple Jade, the main character of A Concubine for the Family. Having produced two daughters and unable to bear more children, Purple Jade knew that the family’s honor depended upon the addition of a male heir to the family, as this was Chinese tradition. She made it her mission to find a solution to this problem. Set during the years 1937-1941, and based on the story of the author’s own grandparents, A Concubine for the Family presents a fascinating picture of daily life and society during a notably tumultuous period in Chinese history.
A Shanghai-born Chinese-American, Amy S. Kwei has twice won the Talespinner Competition sponsored by the Poughkeepsie Journal. One of the judges, Michael Korda, commented: "[Kwei] has a very strong cultural appeal, and gives the reader a quick, instant understanding of Chinese values, and how they differ from our own. As well, it is simply written, perhaps the best written of all the stories here." Her young adult novel, Intrigue in the House of Wong, was published in 2009. Her short stories, children's stories and essays have appeared in many magazines. Kwei is working on Under the Red Moon, a sequel to A Concubine for the Family. An excerpt from the book was published as a short story in the Skollie Magazine of the Aspen Writers’ Foundation.
