The following was submitted by Malden Catholic High School:
Seven Malden Catholic students recently traveled to West Hartford, CT, to participate in the national Xaverian Brothers Sponsored Schools (XBSS) Retreat. Students are selected for the retreat by faculty and staff based on citizenship, participation and leadership qualities.
Participating from Malden Catholic this year were:
• Patrick Allen, a senior from Wilmington
• Brendan Tobey, a junior from Lynn
• Nolen Dube, a junior from Saugus
• Zack Coles and Joseph Leone, juniors from Revere
• Billy Scola, a junior from Malden
• Nick DeSouza., a junior from Medford.
The XBSS Retreat is an annual five-day program gathering approximately 130 students from all the sponsored schools. Students have the opportunity to meet in small groups and participate in workshops. The retreat ends with a day of service in nearby soup kitchens, shelters and other service agencies.
Each year at the Retreat every school pledges to do a project for its school community. This year’s Malden Catholic group pledged to dedicate the Month of November as Remembering the Homeless Month. They will design, construct and present a cross at the annual Malden Catholic Leadership Institute, which will be prominently displayed in the chapel. During November, prayers will be offered for the homeless; in addition, the students will collect and donate toiletries and other items for the homeless. They will call the project “Lancers for the Lost and Forgotten.”
