An East Boston man allegedly involved with the March robbery of a Saugus bank followed by a car chase that ended in Malden was arraigned Thursday in Middlesex Superior Court in Woburn on charges of car-jacking and receiving a stolen motor vehicle in connection with the heist, authorities said.
Gabriel Megna, 48, was one of three men who police say robbed the Saugusbank on the Lynn Fells Parkway March 23 and fled in a stolen car, according to a statement by the office of Middlesex District Attorney Gerard T. Leone Jr. Megna was ordered held on $1 million cash bail by Superior Court Clerk Magistrate Michael Sullivan.
According to authorities, police chased Megna, Michael Ginnetti, 38, of Winthrop, and William Ekasala, 35, of East Boston, to the parking lot of an apartment complex on Broadway in Malden, where they fled the car.
Megna and Ekasala allegedly carjacked a vehicle traveling north on Broadway, shooting at officers while they fled. Officers exchanged gunfire, and Ekasala was fatally wounded.
Megna allegedly forced a woman out of her car, but was unable to drive the stick-shift sedan, so he fled on foot into a nearby apartment complex where officers apprehended him, authorities said.
