The Malden City Council will convene a special Finance Ccommittee meeting Monday to discuss the city budget, the city said. The six-member group of councilors is expected meet at 5:30 p.m. in conference room 609 at Malden Government Center.
Mayor Gary Christenson's $152.8 million spending plan cuts or leaves unfilled 20 city jobs, and calls for the layoff of the equivalent of 37 school department employees. It also includes water and sewer rate hikes of nearly 20 percent, increases driven by higher water use and the long-term cost of repairs to the network of underground piping.
But the mayor has balanced the trimming with reprioritized programming, including substantial commitments to build a new teen center and bolster the police department ranks. Christenson also increased funding for the veteran services department, and has pledged to create a recreation department.
The budget has to be finalized by the start of the 2013 fiscal year July 1.
