While few in Malden would call the decaying downtown a laughing matter, Mayor Gary Christenson's plan to revitalize Pleasant Street received a humorous April Fool's Day boost Sunday.
For the bargain price of $2 million, Christenson's staff announced plans to reconnect Pleasant Street by lifting government center on titanium stilts to allow for cars to pass through underneath. A small toll would help defray project costs.
"It would be some sort of a miracle to raise this building without it falling apart," said Kathleen Manning Hall, laughing in a phone interview.
The prank press release was brainchild of Ron Cochran, Christenson's staff technologist. It has been taken down from the city website.
"Some people thought it was real," Manning Hall said. "We have a sense of humor here at City Hall."
