The Malden City Council cleared the way Tuesday night for the city to hire four new police officers and one cadet.
The $61,000 appropriation submitted by Mayor Gary Christenson allows the department to hire the new recruits by April 1 instead of waiting until the new budget year in July.
The money was drawn from accounts previously set aside to pay rent at the Maplewood fire station, now out of use, and for the salary of the assistant city controller, a position eliminated by a financial restructuring plan.
The council's finance committee unanimously approved the measure 4-0, before the wider council vote.
The Christenson administration has said it will remain committed to rebuilding the police ranks until residents feel safe. One of the officers hired will patrol near the downtown and Malden Center T station, a response to feedback from voters during Christenson's campaign.
