While Malden High boys' lacrosse coaches Brenda Maney and John Malone put the team through its paces, captains Dimas Bardales and Daniel Glynn have been assisting them by taking on leadership roles.
“Dimas holds down the fort on the defensive side of the ball while Dan is a focus of the offense,” said Maney.
A strong senior class consisting of Nate Urban, Stanley Chan, Jackie Wang, Christian Catricala, Justin Pham, Patrick DeCicco, Kieshawn Rattana and others will look to improve on last season.
“There is a lot of excitement about the upcoming season. Underclassmen Paul Kiernan, Cruz Desrochers, Devin Fitzpatrick, TJ Ruddock. and others will support the seniors in hopes of making gains on their opponents from last year,” said Maney
“The first week has not only brought unseasonably warm weather for March but also an eagerness to improve as a team. Last year’s starting goalie, Stanley Chan, has stepped aside for new starting goalie TJ Ruddock. Stanley filled in last year because the team had no goalie. TJ will be a great asset to the team because he is capable of minding the net, while Stanley excels playing midfield.”
“Juniors Allen Delva and Lucas Silva, along with seniors Sergio Lacayo and Josue Figueroa, are all new to the team this year. They’re picking the game up quickly, and look to help the team in small ways at first with ever increasing roles. The main focus for this season is to remain simple, and master the basics of the game. The players feel that with their focus clearly set on manageable goals they can achieve them with hard work and commitment to the team,” said Maney
Last year’s inaugural junior varsity program made this year’s large freshman class of new players possible. Coach Malone is looking forward to all the new talent and is excited about teaching the game to the new crop of Malden High School student athletes. The JV program last year has been a springboard for some of this year’s varsity players and the program looks to redouble that effort.
Friday, March 30th, at 4:30 p.m. is the first home game at Pine Banks. The Golden Tornadoes will be hosting Salem.
