“Family Fishing Day” will be held at Jamaica Pond during school vacation week in April, city officials announced.
Free loaner tackle and free bait will be available at the boathouse from 10 a.m. to noon on Thursday, April 18, officials said.
The event is sponsored by the Boston Parks and Recreation Department; Bass Pro Shops in Foxboro, which is donating the tackle; and P&J Bait in Dorchester, which is donating the bait, officials said. Volunteers from the Brighton-based Fishing Academy will be on site to provide assistance.
No license is required for children under 15, but everyone else must have one.
The state-issued licenses are free for youths between 15 to 17 years old, for adults 70 or older and for people with certain disabilities. For others, there is a fee to obtain a license. For more licensing information and pricing, click here.
“Jamaica Pond offers fishing fun right in the city,” said a statement from Mayor Thomas M. Menino. “Our Family Fishing Day gives anglers of all ages the opportunity to try their luck in the pond that we call ‘the jewel in the Emerald Necklace.’”
