After a multimillion-dollar renovation, the Stop & Shop location on Truman Parkway in Hyde Park is celebrating its reopening with a series of special events and famous guests.
The store now boasts approximately 40,000 square feet, double its previous size, and includes expanded produce, seafood, and prepared foods departments. The enlarged store is energy efficient, with a white roof to reflect sun outside, skylights to capture daylight inside, fluorescent light fixtures, and other energy-saving features. It will provide 60 new jobs for area residents.
“This latest project to rebuild the plaza and open a brand new store underscores our commitment for continued growth in the city of Boston,” said Mark McGowan, president of Stop & Shop’s New England Division, in a statement released by the supermarket chain. “We are proud to be back in Hyde Park and are looking forward to continuing our true partnership with the city of Boston in the years to come.”
The store’s first full day of operation will be Friday, March 30, but Bruins fans can stop by from 6 – 8 p.m. on March 29 for a grand opening reception featuring former defenseman and team captain Ray Bourque.
On Friday, Mayor Thomas M. Menino, a Readville resident, will visit the store at 8 a.m. to reveal the shopping plaza’s new name, chosen by a vote of neighborhood residents. Friday’s festivities will also include visits from Tony the Tiger, the Oreo Man, and the Teddy Graham Bear, as well as tours of the Oscar Mayer Wiener Mobile.
On Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m., Stop & Shop will give away up to $500 worth of $10 gift cards to randomly selected customers buying one or more of Stop & Shop’s Own Brands, including Stop & Shop Brand, Nature’s Promise, Simply Enjoy, Guaranteed Value, CareOne, Companion, and Cottontails. The promotion will continue on weekends through the end of April.
From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, visitors can also sample food in designated areas of the store and collect stamps — after collecting five, adults can redeem their stamps for a free reusable shopping bag and children can trade stamps for a snack from the store’s bakery.
All customers who use their Stop & Shop card at the reopened store between March 30 and April 26 will automatically be entered in a sweepstakes, with prizes including $100 in Stop & Shop gift cards each week for a year, $2,500 in gift cards for free gas, and $1,000 in gift cards.
During the grand opening weekend, all other businesses in the plaza will also participate through additional special promotions.
