Hingham Police have sent four officers in to Boston to assist in the latest response to the Boston Marathon bombing, while "sensitive" areas in Hingham have been placed under heightened surveillance.
Officers assigned to the Metro Rapid Response Team are assisting in Boston, Hingham Police Chief Michael Peraino said, and will be until the situation comes to a close.
“Until this comes to a safe ending [our officers will help],” Peraino said.
Although one of the two suspects identified in the bombing is reportedly dead, and police activity appears to be concentrated in Watertown, Peraino said local police are maintaining vigilance that the threat is not over.
“I think there is a lot more to this. I think there is a reason why they have shut the whole city [of Boston] down,” Peraino said. “These guys, I think there are more people involved.”
To help keep the public safe, all MBTA lines and Commuter Rail lines were closed as of 5 a.m. this morning. The Commuter Boat was also shut down.
The courthouse in Hingham has remained open, but Hingham Police are encouraging residents to stay safe and aware.
“We’re just telling them stay away from the city, everyone be vigilant in looking around and seeing anything suspicious to call us,” Peraino said.
Hingham Town Administrator Ted Alexiades also said that sensitive Hingham areas have been under heightened surveillance.
"We want to keep an eye on our sensitive areas that we have around town. We have sensitive assets that we would like to protect," Alexiades said. "We increased patrols in those areas and keeping an eye on all the transit issues. We focused on the commuter boats and safety for folks over there."
According to Alexiades, Hingham is also preparing for any kind of emergency situation, such as an evacuation from Boston. Hingham is an evacuation route via the commuter boat, Alexiades said.
"We want to be prepared. We’ve run drills to be prepared to deal with that, and [Fire Chief] Mark Duff is running through those ever since the bombings," Alexiades said.
