National Guard corporal and Purple Heart recipient John Marquardt was welcomed back to Hingham with fanfare on Wednesday, as residents and officials came out to offer commendations to the Hingham police officer.
Marquardt was involved with Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan from March 2011 through March 2012, and received a Medal of Valor for his actions in an eight-hour firefight in the mountains separating Afghanistan and Pakistan. He then received a Purple Heart after being struck with debris from a roadside bomb.
Having returned to the states in March, Marquardt said he has been anxious to get back to work with the Hingham Police Department.
He had only been employed with the department for six months before being called up to active duty.
The Hingham police “are my brothers. Just like my Army brothers, these guys are my brothers too,” said Marquardt, who is a resident of Halifax. “It’s great that they are here, and they were very supportive of me when I was over there. So it’s a great feeling to know I’m back to that family again.”
