Ted Alexiades, the current Financial Director for Hingham, has been named Interim Town Administrator, a job he will take on in addition to his current position.
Kevin Paicos, the current Hingham Town Administrator, is a final candidate for a Town Manager position in Foxborough. He also may be deployed to Afghanistan. Alexiades will take over the position sometime in the next two months, when Paicos is expected to depart, Alexiades said.
The Board of Selectmen approved the appointment Tuesday night. Although outside candidates were interviewed, members of the board said it would be best to hire from within.
“Given the limited resources we have to going outside to look for an interim candidate, I think it's not in our best interests at this time,” said John Riley, a Hingham selectman. “I also feel that by bringing someone in from the outside, we'd have to go through a fairly extensive learning curve to get up to speed, with respect to the departments, budget, etc..”
The decision was unanimous among the three selectmen, but selectman Laura Burns still voiced concerns that merging jobs would create difficulty in doing either job to the fullest extent.
“My worries are about getting everything done without adding personnel,” she said. “It puts a burden on employees as we add to their already challenging positions.”
Despite concerns, Paicos was confident in his replacement and excited for Alexiades.
“There is nothing more important for the town administrator than to see the folks he or she works with progress in their careers. Ted [Alexiades] is ready for this opportunity,” he said.
