Commuter rail riders have purchased more than $1 million worth of mobile tickets since the program launched about two months ago, according to MBTA officials.
On Tuesday, a rider on the Lowell line pushed sales of the mTickets, purchased via cellphone, above the $1 million mark, T spokesman Joshua Robin said.
The sales account for more than 100,000 tickets, he said.
“Overall, the program has been hugely successful,” Robin said in an e-mail.
“While early into the rollout, we feel we are revolutionizing how riders buy and use tickets on the commuter rail,” he added. “Customers love the feeling of being able to purchase a ticket anywhere, anytime.”
When the free mobile ticketing smartphone application launched in mid-November, the T became the first major commuter rail in the US to offer passengers an alternative to paper. The app allows riders to buy and display tickets on their smartphones, instead of using cash or prepaid paper tickets and passes.
The smartphone application has been used by more than 35,000 unique visitors who have completed a combined 50,000 transactions, T officials said.
Over the past week, about 9.6 percent of all commuter rail tickets purchased were bought using the mobile app.
“The app has exceeded expectations and the growth we are seeing is phenomenal,” Robin said. “We feel we are saving thousands by not installing expensive vending – all while making riders commutes easier.”
Robin cited a Tweet he saw this week that attested to convenience of the mobile ticketing application.
“I just bought an MBTA train ticket from the comfort of a Stairmaster, thanks to the new app. Pretty cool,” wrote Twitter user @letkevin.
