Tufts Medical Center will honor the head of a New England diagnostic imaging and radiation therapy chain with its inaugural Ellen M. Zane Award for Visionary Leadership, the medical center said in a statement.
Thomas F. Shields, chairman and chief executive officer of Quincy-based Shields Health Care Group, will receive the award at the Working Wonders benefit on March 7, 2013, at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center.
Named for a former CEO of the medical center who retired in 2011, the Zane Award honors those who demonstrate extraordinary leadership within the medical center, the Floating Hospital for Children, Tufts University School of Medicine, or the wider community.
“Tufts Medical Center is thrilled to honor Thomas F. Shields with the first-ever Ellen M. Zane Award for Visionary Leadership,” Eric Beyer, president and CEO of the medical center and the Floating Hospital, said in the statement. “Tom is a leader in the health care industry and has dedicated his life to promote the health of others. I could not think of anyone else more deserving of this leadership award.”
Shields led in the founding of more than 20 diagnostic imaging and radiation therapy centers across the region. He and his family have also supported medical, social service, and recreation enterprises for more than three decades, the medical center said.
