State officials this week unveiled new monitors at South Station that display information about flights departing Boston Logan International Airport.

The two new screens in the busy transit station display information about flights scheduled to take off from Logan Airport for the next four hours. The displays include airline flight numbers, destination, expected departure times, flight status and departure gate, officials said.

The screens also show a countdown to the arrival of the next Logan-bound Silver Line bus.

The monitors cost about $14,000 to purchase and install, officials said. The project was overseen by Massport and the MBTA.

The screens were activated during the busy holiday travel season.

“Catching a flight can be a tense time, especially this time of year,” said a statement from Richard A. Davey, chairman of the Massport board and Secretary of the state transportation department. “These cost-effective information displays reduce the number of variables our customers face when taking a trip.”

Over the summer, state officials announced a pilot program offering free Silver Line bus service from Logan to South Station. The program will continue in 2013.

Shortly before that program launched, the T and Massport installed the first Silver Line bus arrival countdown sign at Logan's Terminal C. Additional displays were placed curbside at the airport's other three terminals later in the spring. Those collaborative projects led to the flight information monitors activated this week at South Station.

Thomas P. Glynn, the CEO & executive director of Massport, noted how flight information monitors are already in place at Airport Station along the T’s Blue Line.

“We want everyone to have a good experience at Logan, and that is especially true for holiday travelers,’’ said a statement from Massport’s aviation director Edward C. Freni.

Starting Dec. 19 through Christmas Eve, Massport will staff additional public service representatives to aid passengers, officials said. And, musicians will entertain passengers throughout the airport terminals.

Travelers should allow extra time to get to and through the airport during the holidays, officials said. Massport recommends arriving two hours prior to departure for domestic flights and three hours prior for international flights.

Travelers should also monitor for updated airline and airport information and should familiarize themselves with Transportation Security Administration carry-on luggage regulations, officials said.

MBTA subway lines, including the Silver Line, will operate on a Sunday schedule on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. For more T schedule information, visit
