Lulu’s Sweet Shoppe will celebrate the opening of its second location in the Financial District on Thursday by giving out free cupcakes all afternoon.
The new store at 85-93 Franklin St. is Lulu’s second, joining the flagship location in the North End, opened in 2004. In an announcement released Wednesday, the bakery said the Financial District location will allow it to better serve corporate clients.
Sandy Russo, founder of Lulu’s, said her success has come from doing things the old-fashioned way.
“I’ve spent years measuring and mixing, frosting and baking and recreating childhood memories of baking with my mother, Rose, and perfecting my technique,” Russo said in the announcement. “I’m thrilled and proud to expand my dream of owning a bake shop, where everything is baked fresh daily for Bostonians.”
The shop’s cupcake include its signature “Lulu Cupcake” — an artisanal take on the familiar Hostess-brand chocolate cupcake made with fresh eggs and butter and a Madagascar vanilla cream filling.
Other popular flavors include the chocolate turtle, chocolate cherry bomb, banana and caramel, blueberry cheesecake, and more exotic combinations such as pistachio with port wine and the chocolate salted caramel s’more.
The cupcakes ordinarily sell for $2.75 each, $16 for a half-dozen, or $29.50 for a dozen. Free cupcakes will be handed out from noon to 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 9, one to a customer.
