Greenway adds new food trucks, carts to 2012 season

More food trucks and mobile vendors will be posted throughout Boston this spring as both the city and the Rose F. Kennedy Greenway Conservancy expand their mobile food truck programs.

After a public raffle to determine which food trucks would be able to park in its program’s top spots, the city announced that eight new vendors were joining the program’s second season starting April 1, bringing the total number of vendors to 23.

“Last year’s food truck pilot program was a great success and it’s wonderful to see so many new and returning food trucks this year,” Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino said in a statement. Menino said the program gives “opportunities to small businesses, enliven public spaces, and promote access to fun, interesting, fresh food across the city.”

The trucks will be operating at 14 sites across the city--including new spots in the South End, Financial District, and Chinatown. Trucks will also be allowed to cluster in three designated locations, including the re-established City Hall Plaza space.

The Rose F. Kennedy Greenway Conservancy also announced this week it is also expanding its “Greenway Mobile Eats” program to 16 vendors at seven locations along the Greenway. Seven are new vendors and nine are returning.

“Now people can come to the Greenway and enjoy food from the Greek Isles, Vietnam, or Mexico, and take advantage of fresh air, free Wi-Fi, our fountains, and free public events,” Nancy Brennan, executive director of the conservancy, said in a statement.

As first reported by Grub Street Boston, the new Greenway vendors are Anthem, a crepe and dessert kiosk; Culinary Cruisers, a bycycle cart selling fruit popsicles; Yo Taco, a taco and burrito kiosk; Renula’s Greek Kitchen food cart; Boston Harbor Ice Cream Cupcake Company; and trucks now seen throughout the city, but not on the Greenway, Kick*ss Cupcakes and Roxy’s Grilled Cheese.

“We are really excited that Roxy’s Grilled Cheese has been selected for ‘Greenway Mobile Eats’,”James DiSabatino, the truck’s owner, said in a statement. “Over the past few years, the Greenway has built a reputation as one of the best food spots in Boston, period.”

The Greenway’s mobile vendor program saw a 128 percent increase to 137,000 patrons in 2011 over 2010’s 60,000 patrons, according to the conservancy.

Brennan said the six food trucks, one trailer, three mobile kiosks, three bikes, and three carts were chosen based on “affordability, professionalism, cuisine type, and the quality of the food.”

Some of the Greenway vendors will start operations by May 1 and all will be running by Memorial Day.
