A new film by Tonya Lewis Lee will premiere at the Strand Theater in Dorchester this Sunday.
Titled the “The Watsons Go to Birmingham” and starring Anika Noni Rose, the movie follows The Watsons as they set out on a road trip to Birmingham, Alabama in the summer of 1963. During their trip they come face to face with the violence that plagued the region during the Civil Rights Movement, including the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham.
Following the premiere, a symbolic march will take place from the Strand Theater to the Salvation Army Kroc Center for a discussion on the role that people of faith played in the movement.
The screening, which is free, will begin at 5 p.m. at the Strand and will be followed by a discussion at the Kroc Center.
