The new mayor of Dorchester, Kelly Butts, joined by Tony Dang.

A new ceremonial mayor of Dorchester has been named to preside over the Dorchester Day Parade, the seaside neighborhood’s most coveted community celebration.

Kelly Butts, a 50-year-old Adams Corner resident, will lead the festivities set for Sunday. By tradition, the person who raises the most money for the event is crowned.

She claimed the title, previously held by Katie Hurley, after she raised more than $4,700 for the parade. Tony Dang, an 31-year-old Ashmont resident, who was also in the running for the position, raised close to $1,000.

“It’s a great cause and a way to keep the parade going,” said Butts. “Every dollar counts.”

Although the title is largely symbolic, it holds a special place in the hearts of many Dorchester residents as they prepare to hold the parade for the 50th consecutive year.

“It’s all about community,” said Marty Hogan, president of the parade. “We have so many different things and people in this neighborhood, this parade really shows it all off.”

Butts, who is originally from Milton, moved to the neighborhood in her early 20s and said she could never find a reason to leave.

“My friends were from Milton when I first moved here,” said Butts. “Then all of a sudden I realized all my friends and my family were from here.”

The money raised by Butts and Dang will be used to support the parade and all the activities that go with it.

The parade will kick-off at 1 p.m. June 2, in Lower Mills. It will travel along Dorchester Avenue and end in Savin Hill.
