Residents from across Boston will get a chance to see a dramatic rendition of civil rights hero Xernona Clayton’s story at Dorchester’s historic Strand Theater Thursday.
The play “Xernona and the Grand Dragon X,” written by Boston’s Jacqui Parker, is set in the 1960s and follows the life of Xernona Clayton, her prime-time talk television show, and her unlikely friendship with a Ku Klux Klan leader.
“We are fortunate to live in a community with such diversity and fortitude and we are happy that we can share this wonderful play with the seniors and youth of Boston in celebration of Black History Month,” Mayor Thomas M. Menino said in a statement.
Thursday’s play will feature students from local colleges and a student from the Boston Arts Academy.
A free showing of the play will be held Feb. 21 from 1 to 3:30 p.m. at the Strand Theater.
