Several Dorchester businesses to represent neighborhood in city's 'Deck the Windows' contest

A number of Dorchester businesses, from Bowdoin-Geneva to St. Mark's, will be representing their neighborhood and their respective Main Streets Districts in this year’s “Deck the Windows” contest.

Now in its third year, the annual holiday competition welcomes businesses from across the city’s 20 Main Street Districts to decorate their storefronts and compete for residents’ votes.

Ashley’s Breakfast Shop, a local gathering spot on Bowdoin Street since 1987, will represent the Bowdoin-Geneva Main Streets in the competition.

“We have been blessed over these many years to have such solid support from the community,” co-owner Marilyn Edmund said in a statement. “I so enjoy decorating the windows for the holidays, and we are thrilled to be chosen as the district winner this year.”

The eatery won’t be the only Dorchester businesses competing for the coveted title. A Sweet Place, representing the Fields Corner Main Street; Reggae on the Grill, representing the Four Corners Main Street; Back to Life Chiropractic and Wellness, representing the St. Mark's Area Main Street; and A&M Bargain Store, which will be representing the Uphams Corner Main Street, are also hoping to be recognized for their crafty decorations.

“Back To Life is thrilled to be part of the Dorchester community,” owner Dr. Anil Nair said in a statement. “We hope people will take advantage of the many shops and services in the neighborhood during the holiday season and all year round.”

Nearly 400 businesses participated in this year's competition, said Sheila Dillon, chief and director of the city's Department of Neighborhood Development, which oversees the Main Street program.

"This contest really fosters a lot of neighborhood pride," Dillon said. "The merchants get competitive, and it creates an excitement in the neighborhoods.

"You can really feel it [excitement] this year," Dillon added. "The economy is slightly better, we had a lot of events this year, and we have a festive atmosphere in the districts."

Although many merchants turnout and give it their all because of neighborhood pride, Dillon said, the decorated storefronts also get shoppers out in the neighborhoods, spending their money locally.

"The money you spend stays in the neighborhood," said Dillon. "For the most part those businesses are hiring your neighbors and local people."

The winner of the contest and the top three vote recipients will be named Dec. 20 and along with the recognition, some bragging rights come with the title.
