Dedham will hold a Special Town Meeting tonight at 7 at the Dedham High School auditorium.
The meeting was called by a group of petitioners who hope to overturn a November Town Meeting vote creating a Senior Center Site Committee and appropriating $50,000 for that committee rather than move forward with a previously proposed senior center plan at the Endicott Estate.
If successful, the vote could move the town toward the Endicott plan.
Since the petition, a new possibility of a multi-use facility has become available at Rustcraft Road. Selectmen and department heads are in the process of touring the more than 200,000 square feet of unused space to see if it will serve as a police station, town hall, senior center, and other municipal uses.
Selectman Carmen Dello Iacono has said he hopes the tentative proposal does not sway Town Meeting members’ votes one way or the other, as the Rustcraft facility is still in the preliminary discussion phase and could fall through. Others, however, have said that the Rustcraft facility offers a new option for a senior center and should be a consideration in the vote.
Also on the warrant is an article for a one-year moratorium on medicinal marijuana dispensaries in town as the rules governing such facilities can be put into practice. Such facilities are currently allowed under a new state law passed in November’s ballot as Question 3, legalizing marijuana for medicinal purposes.
The only other article asks Town Meeting members to authorize putting $48,900 in energy savings toward paying Direct Energy Services, a firm that assisted the town with energy efficiency projects.
