Friends and family members of a Dedham man missing in Rhode Island since Saturday located the man's body in a Providence river Tuesday afternoon, police said.
Gregory Hart, a recent University of Massachusetts Amherst economics graduate, was last seen at The Red Room in Providence late Saturday night. He left the bar around 1 a.m. Sunday and vanished, family members said. His disappearance made headlines around the region and put dozens of Hart’s friends and family members on the South Shore into motion, as they headed south to look for their kin.
His father, John P. Hart, was one of nearly 50 people who spent the past three days searching. They also posted flyers, and family had offered a reward. The body was found in the water, about two miles from the neighborhood bar where he was visiting college friends because one of them recently returned from Air Force boot camp.
“He was the best,” John Hart said. “He went down to see a couple of old college friends, and he went to the wrong place at the wrong time.”
According to Providence Police Lieutenant Paul Campbell, Hart’s body was found around 2:45 p.m. yesterday. The Providence Fire Department sent a rescue boat to remove the body from the river.
The Rhode Island medical examiner’s office is performing an autopsy. Police would not say if the death appeared suspicious, but detectives are now questioning the men Hart was visiting.
A Providence television station is reporting that the body was pulled the body from the water Tuesday afternoon.
