Shuttle buses for Charlestown residents temporarily without a grocery store are running to and from the neighborhood and nearby supermarkets.
The upscale Whole Foods Market bought the lease to the Charlestown storefront, along with leases to five other Foodmasters in the area. Whole Foods, which will be the only supermarket in the neighborhood, is not expected to open until fall 2013.
In the meantime, shuttle buses will drive residents from the neighborhood to a nearby Shaw’s Whole Foods, or Stop & Shop.
A group of residents worked with the Charlestown Neighborhood Council, the mayor’s office, and City Councilors Gene O’Flaherty and Sal LaMattina to set up the shuttle routes.
A shuttle to the Stop & Shop in Medford’s Fellsway Plaza will loop through the neighborhood, picking up residents in the Navy Yard, Hayes Square, the top of Bunker Hill, and the Bunker Hill Mall, on Mondays, and Wednesday through Saturday.
Whole Foods is providing a shuttle from the Bunker Hill Mall to the Whole Foods in Charles Street Plaza on Thursdays and Saturdays.
The John F. Kennedy Family Service Center is hosting a phone line for the weekly shuttle schedule at the number 617-241-8666 ext. 1322. A schedule is available online and available to download.
