As major traffic detours are scheduled to kick in at the Longfellow Bridge this weekend, state transportation officials said Thursday they will reopen the Reid Overpass in Cambridge ahead of schedule Friday morning.
The William J. Reid Overpass along Memorial Drive carries vehicles, cyclists and pedestrian traffic over the rotary at the BU Bridge, and was closed on April 7 for what was expected to be a 6-month project to repair structural deficiencies.
While work under and immediately around the overpass is ongoing, the state Department of Transportation announced Thursday afternoon that it will reopen the span at 6 a.m. Friday, July 19. The ongoing work is not expected to affect traffic, according to the state.
The overpass will reopen one day before detours are expected to begin at the Longfellow Bridge between Boston and Cambridge.
State officials indicated at a hearing last week about the Longfellow Bridge detours that an effort was being made to reopen the Reid Overpass ahead of schedule.
