The loss of the diving board at Belmont’s historic Underwood Pool has disappointed many swimmers in town, and the Recreation Department is offering full refunds on memberships through July 13 for anyone who returns their membership tags, according to the Recreation Department.
Memberships cost $190 before July 1, and $210 after July 1. The full cost will be refunded, according to Recreation Program Supervisor June Howell, until 1 p.m. on Friday.
So far, she said, only two memberships have been returned.
The Underwood Pool turns 100 this year, and time has not been kind. The Board of Health declared the diving board unsafe on June 20, saying that the water below was not deep enough to dive into.
The Department of Public Works, Health Department and the Board of Selectmen have all voiced concerns that the pool itself is in disrepair, and have begun discussing whether it should be rebuilt entirely.
