Dependable Cleaners has ched its annual Read to Ride campaign, which gives youths age 6 to 15 a chance to win a bicycle or another prize for each book they read.
The program, which runs through Aug. 13, is intended to foster a lifelong love of books by encouraging children to stay in the habit of reading over summer vacation. Children in the program have read more than 59,000 books since it began in 1999.
“Studies show that children who develop a love of reading early in life often see more success in school and in life,” said Christa Hagearty, president of Dependable Cleaners, in a press release.
“We are proud of Read to Ride’s success but we couldn’t do it without the cooperation of area schools, their directors and superintendents, our sponsors, and the overwhelming number of parents who encourage their children to read during the summer months.”
To participate, children fill out an entry form for each book they read and submit it at a Dependable Cleaners location or through the cleaners’ home delivery drivers. The forms are available at store locations , libraries, Farina’s Bike Store in Watertown, David’s Bike Infirmary in Milton, and online at http://www.dependablecleaners.com/Read-Ride.
Dependable Cleaners will award a grand prize of a new bicycle and bike helmet each Monday from June 4 – Aug. 13, except for July 2. Two runners-up will receive gift cards for a local sporting goods store or activity in Greater Boston. To help children get excited about reading, Read to Ride will include free Story-Time with the Author events featuring children’s authors reading from their most recent books.
Read to Ride 2012 is sponsored by Dependable Cleaners with support from Buttonwood Books, Dave’s Bike Infirmary, Farina’s Bicycle Center, Newtonville Books, Patch.com, and The Patriot Ledger.
