Canoes and kayaks will be available for rental four-days a week this summer at Arlington’s Spy Pond.
The rentals are part of a new program announced by the town’s Recreation Department today as an effort to make boating more accessible to the public.
Canoes and kayaks will be available for rent on an hourly basis at the pond, near Route 2, on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. beginning June 8.
“Quiet water paddling is popular on other area water bodies such as the Mystic, Charles and Sudbury Rivers, said Recreation Director Joe Connelly in a press release announcing the rentals today. “Paddling is a great way to spend time with family and friends while also getting a little exercise.”
Rental programs have been tried at Spy Pond before, but the new program will make the boats more accessible to the public by keeping them on site and removing a pre-registration requirement of previous programs, according to the town. Canoes and kayaks will be available on a first come, first serve basis, and life preservers will be provided.
The town will add more boats depending on the success of the program.
The kayaks and canoes will launch from the Spy Pond public boat ramp at Spy Pond Park on Pond Lane.
On site boat rental rates are $10 for a single kayak, $12 for a tandem double kayak, and $15 for a canoe. Passes are also available through the Arlington Recreation Department at $50 for five hours of any boat rental, $100 for 11 hours of any boat rental and $150 for 17 hours of any boat rental. The bulk passes can be purchased online here.
