Eric E. Schmidt, executive chairman of Google, will deliver the commencement address at Boston University on May 20, the college said today.

Schmidt previously was Google’s chief executive officer for a decade at a time of rapid growth for Google.

BU's 139th graduation ceremonies will be held May, 20, at 1 p.m., on Nickerson Field. More than 5,000 are expected to graduate in what the college calls the region's largest commencement ceremony.

The state's robust graduation season kicks off Friday, with the commencement of Northeastern University at the TD Garden. Former Secretary of State Colin Powell will be the speaker.
