The following is an announcement from New Balance:
Runners and walkers from across the Commonwealth are invited to join family and friends of the late Boston City Councilor Brian Honan for the 8th Annual Brian J. Honan 5K Road Race presented by New Balance on Sunday, September 25th at noon in Allston-Brighton.
Funds raised from the event will benefit scholarships for the Allston Board of Trade and the Brighton Board of Trade. The race also benefits the Brian J. Honan Charitable Fund which fosters local and national programs that support education, recreation, housing and healthcare.
Brian J. Honan served the Allston-Brighton community for more than seven years as District City Councilor and for his whole life as an advocate for Allston-Brighton and the people of the City of Boston.
“Brian lived a life filled with purpose and spirit which transformed ideas into action,” says Kevin Honan, State Representative. “Brian’s vocation in serving the people of Boston – seniors, young people, community based workers and educators – left an unparalleled legacy that we are proud to honor and carry on through this great community road race.”
Covering 3.1 miles of Allston-Brighton, the family-friendly run/walk welcomes all participants from competitive runners to families with strollers. The loop race begins at Tavern in the Square at 161 Brighton Avenue (near the intersection of Harvard Avenue and Brighton Avenue) in Allston Village, passes through historic Union Square and onto Cambridge Street, and then onto Washington Street through Brighton Center before looping back to finish at Tavern in the Square.
“As a long-time member of the Allston-Brighton community, New Balance is proud to join State Representative Kevin Honan and the hundreds of local runners and walkers who support the important causes that Brian Honan championed throughout his lifetime,” says Amy Dow, Sr. Global Corporate Communications Manager for New Balance.
Participants in the USA Track and Field sanctioned event will enjoy world-class race amenities including a pre-race stretching tent, pace car, water and timing stations, post-race refreshments provided by Tavern in the Square, and free long-sleeve race t-shirts for the first 1000 race entrants. Race medals will be provided to the first three finishers in each category with the first place prizes furnished by New Balance.
Interested participants can register at www.brianhonan.org, call race director Richard Grealish at 617-549-7503, or register on race day beginning at 9:30 a.m. at Tavern in the Square. Participants may also pick up their race numbers on Saturday, September 24th from 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. at the New Balance Factory Store in Brighton located at 40 Life Street.
