Pictures of famous figures from Medford
The musician was in a Medford tavern when he wrote "Jingle Bells" as a way to celebrate the Salem Street sleigh races.
Historians say Pierpont wrote the song at Simpson Tavern, a boarding house that at the time had the only piano in town.
For some reason, Georgia has tried to claim Pierpont wrote the song in his home state. But a researcher found a New England newspaper from the early 1840s that mentioned "One Horse Open Sleigh" debuting in Medford at a Thanksgiving church service. Pictured is James Pierpont's gravestone in Georgia.
