DANVERS, Mass.—A firefighter and Marine veteran of the war in Iraq has been sentenced to a year in jail after being found guilty of vehicular homicide.

Prosecutors say 30-year-old Thomas Lantych of Hamilton, a Beverly firefighter and part-time Rowley police officer, was at the wheel of his SUV on June 7, 2009 when he struck and killed 56-year-old Linda Robinson of Beverly, who had pulled over and was standing outside her car.

The Salem News reports that Judge Richard Mori called the crash "clearly avoidable."

Lantych got a 2 1/2-year sentence, with a year to serve and the remainder suspended for five years.

Lantych's lawyer asked for a delay in sentencing to allow the judge hear from therapists who have been treating Lantych for post-traumatic stress disorder since his military discharge.
