The restaurateur, author, and television cooking personality helped raise Greater Boston's consciousness about Chinese dining.
She opened her first restaurant in Central Square in 1958, bringing the first tastes of Mandarin and Szechuan cuisine to the area.
Initial tastes included of hot and sour soup, Peking ravioli, Peking noodles, bon bon chicken and spicy beef. (Chen renamed dumplings into ravioli then, to help introduce the new cuisine concept.)
