JPMorgan Chase & Co. is opening a loan counseling center in Cambridge to help homeowners struggling to pay their mortgages.

The lender is expected to officially open the office today at One Canal Park, Suite 1125, to provide in-person counseling for troubled borrowers with loans serviced by Chase or EMC.

Steve Stein, Chase’s head of Homeownership Preservation, said the center is part of a larger initiative by the lender to help families avoid foreclosure. It is one of about 80 such centers around the country. “We created these local homeownership centers so our borrowers can sit down and discuss their situation face-to-face with trained advisers in these challenging times,’’ Stein said.

Borrowers with Chase or EMC mortgages can call 617-225-0915 to make an appointment if they are behind on their monthly mortgage payments, facing a drop in income, or need more information.
