St. Mary's girls adjust

Offensive depth the key to victory

St. Mary’s received goals from five players in a 5-0 girls’ hockey victory over Reading last night.

The Spartans (2-0) are looking to make up for the loss of last year’s top scorer, Sabrina Iannetti, who graduated. “We want to have balance,’’ said coach Frank Pagliuca. “Tonight is a good sign. We were really focusing on playing well and having a solid team offense.’’

Sophomore Gina Beth Manganiello scored the Spartans’ first goal, then Gabrielle Crugnale, Kaleigh Finnigan, Brittani Lanzilli, and Alison Butler also found the back of the net.

“It’s a team concept, we need to spread the goals around,’’ said Pagliuca. “We need to be creating opportunities and finishing them.’’

Dedham 6, Needham 1 - Sophomore Colleen Downing and freshman Sam Girard combined for four goals and four assists.

Archbishop Williams 4, Notre Dame (Hingham) 2 - Freshman Nora Maclain had two goals and an assist and Erin Dwyer added a goal and two assists for the Bishops.

Acton-Boxboro 6, Concord-Carlisle 2 - Senior defenseman Emily Loebs netted a hat trick, and junior forward Kati Goguen added two goals and one assist for the Colonials (2-0).

Winthrop 4, Masconomet 1 - Sophomore left wing Ariana Dembro scored a goal and an assist. Alex Jones collected 63 saves in the loss.

Westwood 9, Latin Academy 2 - Nine players scored for the Wolverines as they outshot the Dragons, 38-5, in a season-opening win.

Watertown 4, Belmont 2 - Senior Erika Kelly scored a pair of goals, and Anna Kleis recorded 36 saves for the win.

Norwell 3, Hanover 0 - Lilly Cleary, Tori Dinger and Paxton Coley and Jessica Mitchell earned her second shutout for the Clippers.

Wellesley 8, Framingham 3 - Molly Connolly scored seven goals for the Raiders.

Natick 4, Weymouth 1 - Leah White had two goals and two assists for the Red and Blue.

Norwood 5, Newton North 1 - The Mustangs got goals from Kacie Smith, Kaitlin McCarthy, Jenny O’Donnell, Haley O’Rourke, and Heather Folan.

Lexington 4, Burlington 1 - Senior Katie Legnard stopped 16 shots and junior Sara Lehman had two goals and an assist for the Minutemen (2-0).

Boys’ hockey

Danvers 3, Winthrop 2 - Sophomore Joe Strangie had the winner five minutes into the third.

Andover 3, Billerica 0 - Senior Liam Centrella and junior Scott Campbell each had a goal and an assist for the Golden Warriors.

St. Mary’s 8, Bishop Fenwick 2 - Junior Cam O’Neill scored two goals and added an assist for the Spartans.

Burlington 7, Lexington 1 - Senior Brian Hood notched a hat trick for the Red Devils.

St. Clement 6, Mystic Valley 5 - Rob McMaster and Matt Mahoney had two goals and two assists each to lead the Vikings.

North Quincy 5, Whitman-Hanson 1 - Shawn Grady led the Red Raiders with two goals, including a shorthanded tally, and James Doherty added a five-on-three shorthanded goal.

Lowell 2, Weston 2 - Joey Quale assisted on both goals for the Wildcats.

Saugus 4, Gloucester 0 - Senior Nick Hegarty stopped 28 shots and senior left wing Sage Tait recorded two goals.

Silver Lake 2, Quincy 1 - Matt Hill made 20 saves to earn the win in his first varsity start for the Lakers.

Framingham 4, Wellesley 2 - Senior center Jake McKinnon capped off his hat trick with a shorthanded, winning goal with 3 1/2 minutes left.

Archbishop Williams 8, Matignon 1 - Sophomore left wing Ryan Dunn had a hat trick for the Bishops.

Rockland 4, Hull 2 - Chris Tanner, John Mulready and Kevin Sheehan each collected a goal and an assist.

Boys’ basketball

O’Bryant 54, Community Academy of Science and Health 48 - Junior point guard Ian Jaffnier led the Tigers with 16 points and four assists.

New Mission 83, Burke 25 - Leroy Hamilton led the Titans with 19 points and nine rebounds and Greg Bridges added 12 points and eight steals.

Brighton 77, Boston English 60 - Junior guard Dwayne Harper (16 points, 8 rebounds, 8 assists, 5 steals) and sophomore forward Nick Simpson (18 points, six rebounds) led the Bengals in their season opener.

West Roxbury 66, Dorchester 64 - Markus Neale led the Raiders with 34 points, 6 assists, and 4 steals. Sterling Brown contributed 14 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 steals.

Cardinal Spellman 64, Bishop Fenwick 35 - Senior Joe Glynn scored 18 points, including the 1,000th of his Cardinals career.

Girls’ basketball

Andover 81, Chelmsford 57 - Boston College-bound Nicole Boudreau had 30 points and senior captain Jen Janiak added 20 points.

Pope John 49, Cathedral 31 - Coach Shawn Thornton earned his first victory for the Tigers.

Brighton 35, Boston English 22 - Shantal Solomon had 11 points and four assists, and Renesha Gunter added 12 rebounds for the Bengals.

Wellesley 58, Newton South 53 - Gracie Miller has 24 points and 21 rebounds in the Raiders’ victory. Kayla Burton had 26 points, including three 3-pointers for the Lions.


Braintree 39, Weymouth 38 - John DeNapoli (120 pounds) had a pin in the final match to give the Wamps (4-0) their first victory over the Wildcats.
