Tufts Medical Center is butting heads with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts over a new multi-year contract covering the Boston hospital and doctors in its system. Tufts executives complain their medical center isn’t paid as much as Boston’s highest-profile hospitals but cares for more Medicaid patients whose treatment leads to financial losses. The Tufts negotiations highlights a big financial issue inside most hospitals - cost shifting that covers shortfalls in government insurance programs with charges to private patients with commercial insurance.
