John William McCormack
The influential politician was born in raised in South Boston. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 1928 and then elected Speaker of the US House in 1962.
He took part of sweeping legal changes such as FDR's New Deal and the Social Security Act, as well as the creation of Medicare and Medicaid in LBJ's Great Society.
In a 1935 Boston Globe interview, McCormack said "I have no hesitancy in insisting that Government in an emergency do everything that can be reasonably done to relieve human suffering and distress."
