Pondering the future of the old Filene's site
Jeremy C. Fox for Boston.com
Northeastern University students from Lee Moreaus environmental design class occupied a downtown street corner to draw attention to the open pit where Filenes once stood. The block was planned as the site of a 39-story tower of residences, offices, and retail space, but work on the project ceased more than three years ago. Vornado, the lead developer for the site, has been unwilling to move forward or to sell the property at a loss.
The students engaged passerby with varied projects some quite satirical to help draw attention to the site, show how the loss of the retail anchor had blighted downtown, and dramatize the tensions between the city and the developers.
