Baseball mittState Representative Marty Walsh told the artist of his boyhood in Richardson Park, "As kids we played ball at the Blakie with anything we could find."
The quote on the other side of this sculpture comes from a Boston Globe article dated 1887, which describes the Boston Resolutes, a team in the League of Colored Baseball Clubs, which won a game in Kentucky, but were so broke they had to walk home.
Baring-Gould describes this piece as being about "love of the game," whatever the consequences.
