Nine things to know about Charlestown
With its location on both the Charles and Mystic rivers, Charlestown has a deep maritime history. The USS Constitution, better known as Old Ironsides, is docked in the Charlestown Navy Yard. Launched in 1797, Old Ironsides is the oldest commissioned vessel in the US Navy and was named by George Washington. Speaking of docking boats, Charlestown was also home to the first dry dock in America, built in 1678.
